Lynx squash Gators in home opener, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Lesley scored the first 14 points of the day and cruised to a 3-0 win over Pine Manor behind six kills each from Megan Ortwein and Alyson Finbow in the Lynx home opener Saturday in non-conference women's volleyball play at the Nicholas Athletics Center.

Ortwein (Easton, PA/Shanghai American) totaled six kills with no errors on nine attempts for a scorching .667 hitting percentage, leading all players. Finbow (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn), meanwhile, threw down six kills with only one error on eight swings for a hearty .625 average, adding a match-high three solo blocks as the Lynx improved to 2-3.

For Pine Manor, Destiny Mann (Orlando, FL/Cypress Creek) tied for match-best honors with six kills and seven digs, but the Lynx hit .000 as a team in falling to 0-4.

The Lynx sprinted out to a 14-0 lead behind Ortwein's career-high six service aces, all coming in the set's first 13 points. A Betzy Maysonet-Urbina (Jamaica Plain, MA/Madison Park) ace made it a 16-8 game, but Pine Manor would pull no closer in the Lynx 25-14 victory.

With leading hitters Ortwein and Danielle Johnson sitting out, the middle set was markedly closer, as two Lynx errors tied the set at 15-15. Clinging to an 18-17 lead, Lesley scored the set's final seven points behind a pair of aces from freshman Donna Niosi (Quincy, MA/Quincy), pulling away for a 25-17 win.

One of Maysonet-Urbina's team-high three service aces pushed the Gators out to a 6-2 lead to open the third. Lynx senior Kaitlyn Miller (Leeport, PA/Schuylkill) answered with two aces and Ortwein added two kills in an 8-0 run that gave Lesley the lead for good at 10-6 as the Lynx coasted to a 25-18 triumph.

As a team, Lesley hit .429 for the set, with Pine Manor hitting .133, its highest average of the afternoon.

Niosi led all players with 18 set assists on the day, and sophomore Rachel Frederickson (Marston Mills, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth) tied for match-high honors with seven digs.

Lesley returns to the court on Tuesday at home against Salem State at 7:00 p.m.
