Lynx hang on for 3-2 win at Anna Maria

PAXTON, MA -- Early leads in the opening two sets put Lesley in front 2-0, but the Amcats scraped back to tie the contest at 2-2 before a Game 5 comeback sent the Lynx to victory Monday night, 3-2 over Anna Maria at the Fuller Center.

Lesley dropped Games 3 and 4, each 25-19, and, despite an early lead in the finale, trailed 13-11 before two Amcats errors and a pair of Megan Ortwein kills bailed the Lynx out in an exciting come-from-behind victory.

Freshman Danielle Johnson led Lesley with 12 kills and 40 attempts. Junior Kaitlyn Miller added team-highs of 15 assists and four service aces, and freshman Rachel Frederickson chipped in with 11 digs as the Lynx improved to 6-15 with a second win in three matches.

After Lesley opened up a 10-4 lead thanks to some sloppy play from the Amcats, Miller sent home a two of her four aces in the Lynx 25-14 opening set victory. The visitors got out to an 11-4 lead in the second set on kills from Ortwein and Johnson, and after the Amcats cut the margin to three, at 20-17, kills from senior Kayla Henry and first-year Alyson Finbow closed out a 25-20 victory.

Anna Maria turned the tide in the middle set, opening up a 12-6 lead on a pair of Sandy Acosta kills, and the Amcats went on to win, 25-19. Like the previous set, the Cats sprinted out to a 12-6 lead behind Acosta's strong play at the net. She and teammate Alex Rodriguez each totaled three kills in another 25-19 Amcats win, evening the match at 2-2.

Lesley jumped out to the early 7-2 lead in Game 5, but an 11-4 run led again by Acosta, this time with three kills, put the Amcats ahead 13-11. Anna Maria errors alternated with Ortwein kills over the next four points, and the Lynx held on to fend off the Amcats comeback.

Ortwein totaled eight kills, seven digs and a season-high seven set assists. Finbow and fellow freshman Aishah Jenkins combined for a .500 hitting percentage with five kills and only one error on eight attempts.

Lesley returns to play on Wednesday in NECC play at Regis.
