WPI spikers silence Lynx, 3-0, in home opener

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Lesley University dropped a 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-23) decision to visiting WPI Wednesday night at BB&N's Nicholas Athletics Center.

Offensively, WPI junior Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) led all players with four kills and a .429 hitting percentage, while Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, MA) and Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) anchored the Engineers defense with three solo blocks and nine digs, respectively.

Lesley libero Rachel Frederickson (Marston Mills, MA) led all players with 14 digs, while Kaitlyn Miller (Leesport, PA) tied for team-high honors with two kills and led the Lynx with three set assists.

The Engineers set the tone for a long night for Lesley early on, jumping out to a 7-0 lead with Dorenfeld serving to start Game 1, which WPI won 25-7. In the middle set, one of Kayla Henry's (Saratoga Springs, NY) two kills brought the Lynx to within 9-7, but a 12-2 run featuring a solo block and back-to-back service aces by Bailey opened up a 21-9 Engineers lead in its 25-11 Game 2 victory.

The Lynx came out inspired to open the third set, with kills from freshmen Fredrickson and Danielle Johnson (Waterford, CT) helping the team open up a 6-2 lead. WPI battled back to tied the set at 10-10, but a block by Lesley's Megan Ortwein (Shanghai, China) gave her team back the lead at 14-13.

With the Lynx clinging to a 23-22 lead, a Miller service error and consecutive kills from freshly-inserted junior hitter Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) closed out WPI's 25-23 win.

Lesley returns to play in non-conference action tomorrow night at Salem State, while Worcester travels to NEWMAC rival Wellesley on Saturday.
