ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Seven of the eight sponsored programs
were represented on 2009 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC)
Women’s Volleyball All-Conference Team, it was announced
today by Commissioner Del Malloy. In addition to the All-NECC
honors, four separate major individual award winners and the team
sportsmanship award were also voted upon and selected this
week.
The Lesley University Lynx senior middle hitter Lindsey Marek
(Killingworth, Conn.) was named the 2009 NECC Women’s
Volleyball Player of the Year. Marek finished 4th in the NECC with
a .323 hitting percentage and ranked sixth in kills. Overall she
has played in and started 25 matches with 80 sets tallying 179
kills (2.24 kills per set), 12 service aces, 67 digs (0.84 per
set), 41 blocks (1.51 per set) and four assists. In conference
play, Marek had 56 kills (2.55 kills per set), 5 aces, 21 digs and
15 blocks.
Bay Path’s junior Libero Davi Chuong (Easthampton, Mass.)
nabbed the inaugural 2009 NECC Women’s Volleyball Defensive
Specialist of the Year. Chuong, a business management major, led
the NECC in digs at 113 (4.36 per set) and was 10th in service aces
at 19 (0.73 per set). She played in 20 matches with 209 digs, 135
serve receptions and average 1.44 digs per set.
Daniel Webster Eagles’ freshman outside hitter Chelsey
Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) nabbed the 2009 NECC Women’s
Volleyball Rookie of the Year for her first season of collegiate
play. Wilson, a marketing management major, led the conference with
a .351 attack percentage. She finished NECC play with 57 kills
(2.71 per set), 13 service aces, 22 digs (1.05 per set) and ten
blocks (0.48 per set). Overall, Crawford has 168 kills (2.55 per
set), 32 service aces and 62 digs and 48 blocks.
Crawford was joined by her coach Braden Zamore earning top NECC
honors. Zamore was named the 2009 Women’s Volleyball Coach of
the Year. He led the Eagles to a perfect 7-0 NECC finish. For their
efforts, the Eagles grabbed the #1 seed and will be hosting the
2009 Women’s Volleyball Tournament. Daniel Webster is
currently 14-6 overall.
The Nighthawks of Newbury College, led by head coach Jaime
Terenzi, were honored as the 2009 NECC Team Sportsmanship Award
recipients. The Nighthawks concluded conference play in second
place with a 6-1 finish and 12-19 on the season. They earned the #2
seed and earned a first round bye heading to semifinal action
tomorrow at Daniel Webster.
Voting for the All-NECC team and each of the major awards was
conducted among all NECC women’s volleyball coaches.
Joining Marek and Crawford on first team were Newbury’s
freshman outside hitter Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, N.Y.),
Lesley’s freshman middle blocker Amanda McCracken
(Eldersburg, Md.), senior middle blocker Kristina Rieger (Concord,
N.H.) and Elms’ sophomore outside hitter Stacy Croteau
(Agawam, Mass.).
Second team honors went out to six student-athletes. Daniel
Webster sophomore setter Caitlyn DiPierro (Billerica, Mass.),
Newbury sophomore outside hitter Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, R.I.),
Newbury freshman middle blocker Stephanie Williams (Medford,
Mass.), Daniel Webster freshman outside hitter Samantha Hill
(Hudson, N.H.), Newbury senior setter Sarah Nelson (Bernardston,
Mass.) and Elms senior middle hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee,
Mass.)
Five players received honorable mention including Chuong, Elms
senior setter Kim Phillips (Blue Hills Regional, Mass.), Mitchell
junior outside hitter Stephanie Davis (Ledyard, Conn.), Lesley
freshman setter Kaitlyn Miller (Leesport, Penn.) and Lesley junior
outside hitter Meaghan Chadwick (Chelmsford, Mass.).
