Lynx fall to Mariners 3-1 in home opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Maine Maritime women's volleyball defeated Lesley University 3-1 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 2-6 (0-0 NAC) while the Lynx dropped to 0-2 (0-0 NECC) on the season.

The Mariners received a solid performance from junior Amy Young (Cumberland, Me.) who led the team in kills with nine while compiling five digs and three service aces.  Young was complemented offensively by Kristi Gordon (Auburn, Me.) whose six kills were good for second on the team.

Setter Heather Moore (Macedon, N.Y.) dished out 14 assists and also tacked on 12 digs in the victory.  Lauren Sakahara (Bellevue, Wash.) was also impressive defensively as the libero tallied 11 digs for the Mariners.

The Lynx looked to improve their team chemistry with several players reaching a high number of kills.  Kelly Harrington (Toledo, Ohio) led the team with eight kills followed by Lindsey Marek (Killingworth, Conn.) and Kaitlyn Wechsler (Merrick, N.Y.) with seven kills apiece.

Senior setter Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, N.Y.) tallied 25 assists on the day as she distributed the ball out to several of her teammates.

Defensively, the Lynx were led by Marek and Hanna Sakamoto (Tokyo, Japan) who each had 11 digs in the match's four sets.

The Lynx will next be in action on Tuesday, September 16 as they will host Saint Joseph College (ME) at 7:30 pm.  Maine Maritime will host Unity College on the same day starting at 7:00 pm.
