THE LEAD – Lesley University picked up its second straight win to open the 2023 campaign, topping UMass Dartmouth by a 6-2 final on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's tennis action at the Beren Tennis Courts in Cambridge, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jessica Legendre and Mary Osucha got the Lynx off to a fast start with an 8-1 win in the No. 1 doubles pairing but the Corsairs responded with an 8-4 win in No. 3 doubles as Saige Croce and Sajdah Benjamin helped the visitors even the match at 1-1.
  • Brooke Whitten and Jordan Blair swung the momentum back in favor of the hosts with a tight win in No. 2 doubles to give Lesley a 2-1 lead heading into singles play thanks to an 8-7 (7-5) win to wrap tandem play.
  • Croce gave UMD some hope with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in No. 6 singles to briefly pull the Corsairs even at 2-2 but it was short-lived as Osucha, Whitten and Legendre quickly picked up wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 1 singles play to secure the match for Lesley.
  • Lucy Boyce added a win in fifth singles action in come-from-behind fashion, dropping the first set 3-6 before rallying for a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set, forcing the tie-breaker in the third where she prevailed, 10-4 for the win.
  • Blair played strong in No. 4 singles play, winning the first set 7-6 (7-5) before her match was halted as it would have no direct result to the outcome of the team result.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The 2-0 start for Lesley marks the first time since 2010 that the Lynx have opened a new campaign with back-to-back wins. 13 years ago the Lynx opened the year with back-to-back 5-4 wins over Mount Ida and Newbury College.
