Women's Tennis Heads to NECC Championship

LEICESTER, Mass. – For the second straight season, the Lesley University women's tennis team will head to Regis College for the new England Collegiate Conference Championship. The third-seeded Lynx defeated second-seeded Becker College 5-4 this afternoon in the NECC Semifinal match in Leicester, Mass.

The win avenges a pair of 5-4 loss the Hawks dealt to the Lynx during the regular season. Lesley will play the Pride tomorrow at 1:00p.

The Hawks got off to a good start as they won two of the three doubles matches. At number three, the tandem of freshman Jessica Leger (Auburn, Mass.) and senior Kerry Saltvick cruised to an 8-3 decision against Hannah Levensailor and Courtney Goggin.

Becker got a service break at number two that was the difference in the match as sophomore Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) and freshman Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.) topped Frances De Leon and Diana Watson, 8-6. The Lynx lone win came at number one where Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) beat Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and Livia Smith (Worcester, Mass.), 8-2.

With a spot in the finals on the line, the singles matches were tightly contested as four of the six went to three sets. Smith put Becker's third point on the board when she beat Pereira, 7-6, 6-0 at number three. Lesley got its second point at number one as Kiddie beat Loard, 6-2-6-1.

Mahan put Becker within a point from victory when she won her number five match, 0-6, 7-6, 6-3 over Rosie Heller. Unfortunately, the rest of the third sets went to Lesley. De Leon beat Andrade at number two 7-5, 6-2, 2-6 and Watson topped Leger 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at number four. The final point came at number six where Goggin beat Wodell 7-5, 6-4, 4-6.
