Late Surge Carries Becker Past Women's Tennis

LEICESTER, Mass. – The Lesley University women's tennis team dropped tough decision to Becker College as the Hawks came from behind to top the Lynx 5-4 this afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference matchup.

With the victory, Becker improved to 5-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play while the Lynx dropped to 1-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference with the loss.

The Lynx claimed two of three doubles matches before the Hawks stormed back to win four of six singles matches to claim the match.

Lesley sophomores Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) downed Becker's top pairing of Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and Jessica Leger (Auburn, Mass.) 8-1 in the top doubles flight to claim their fourth win in the last five matches. Lynx junior Frances De Leon (Murrieta, Calif.) and senior Rose Heller (State College, Pa.) won for the fourth straight time as they out-dueled Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) 9-7 in No. 2 doubles.

The Hawks claimed their sole doubles victory in the third flight as Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Elizabeth Jezierski (Thompson, Conn.) topped Lynx junior Hannah Levensailor (Ayer, Mass.) and sophomore Courtney Goggin (Cheshire, Conn.) 8-6.

After dropping the first set, Kiddie battled back to win the second and third to top Lord 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the lead singles match before Pereira rolled through Leger 6-2, 6-1 at number three singles.

Saltvick earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Levensailor in the sixth match before Wodell passed through Goggin 6-2, 6-1 at number five. Mahan tied the match for the hosts by stopping Heller 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 match.

With the score tied at 4-4, the match came down to a hard fought number two singles match. Becker sophomore Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) split her first two sets then came through with a break of serve to top De Leon 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to earn the win for the hosts.

The Lynx face a quick turnaround as they will play host to Newbury College tomorrow night at 7:30p while the Hawks will return to action on Saturday when they head to Regis College for a 2:00p tilt.
