Mariners Sail Past Women's Tennis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Mitchell College topped Lesley University 6-3 in New England College Conference women's tennis action tonight at the Nicholas Athletics Center. The Mariners improve to 2-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 in conference play while the Lynx drop to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in the NECC.

Mitchell took two out of three in the doubles portion of the match before taking four of six singles matches on the night.

Mariners sophomore Lehayla Cruz (Bridgeport, Conn.) and freshman Brittany Fuller (Bolton, Conn.) teamed up to earn an 8-4 decision over Lynx sophomore Courtney Goggin (Cheshire, Conn.) and junior Hannah Levensailor (Ayer, Mass.) in No. 3 doubles.

The Lynx tied up the match briefly as sophomore Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) blanked Mariners senior Samantha Ryan (Quaker Hill, Conn.) and junior Heather Schall (Hopatcong, N.J.) 8-0 at first singles. Mitchell's Veyda McVey (Wallingford, Conn.) and Dominique Lacriox (Parker, Colo.) then scored an 8-7 win over Frances De Leon (Murrieta, Calif.) and Rosie Heller (State College, Pa.) in second doubles to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead heading into the singles portion of the match.

De Leon started with a 6-1, 6-0 win for the hosts over Schall in the number two match before Cruz put the Mariners back up by one with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Goggin in No. 5 singles. The Lynx would tie it up once more as Kiddie defeated Ryan 6-2, 6-3 in the top flight, but McVey and Lacroix would each earn wins in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, to give the guests the match.

Lesley will return to their home court on Thursday when they host Wentworth at 7:30p in non-conference action while Mitchell will play host to Becker College on Saturday at 12:00p in an NECC matchup.
