Women's Tennis Slam Past Mitchell With Sweep

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University women's tennis team completed a season sweep of Mitchell College with a 9-0 win this afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. Lynx, who topped the Mariners 8-1 in New London, Conn. on September 20th in their first meeting of the season, improve to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. With the loss, Mitchell falls to 2-6 on the year and 1-5 in NECC play.

The Lynx jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage as they swept doubles play. Lynx juniors Christyl Skelton (Burlington, Mass.) and Victoria Bunker (Auburn, Maine) started the afternoon with an 8-0 victory over Mariner junior Dominique Lacroix (Parker, Colo.) and freshman Lehayla Cruz (Bridgeport, Conn.). Senior Carissa Iverson (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) and sophomore Frances De Leon (Murrieta, Calif.) teamed up to earn a 9-8 (7-3) win over junior Jenny Groman (New Britain, Conn.) and Veyda McVey (Wallingford, Conn.) in the No. 2 doubles flight. The No. 1 tandem of freshman Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Carlyn Barker (Murrieta, Calif.) completed the sweep as they earned an 8-0 decision over Mitchell freshman Laura Simmons (Emerson, N.J.) and sophomore Samantha Ryan (Quaker Hill, Conn.).

Skelton started off singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cruz in the No. 6 flight while Barker followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over McVey in the third singles match to seal the win for the Lynx.

After dropping the first set, Kiddie came back to defeat Simmons 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 match before Lynx senior Meghann Toomajian (Nahant, Mass.) also made a comeback effort to take the No. 5 match 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-2. Iverson outlasted Ryan in the second flight 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-1) before De Leon rounded out the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Groman in the No. 4 match.

The Lynx will hit the road to Longmeadow, Mass. as they take on Bay Path College on Wednesday, October 8th at 3:30p. The Mariners will return to the court on Tuesday, October 7th as they host Becker College at 3:00p.
