Women's Tennis Storms Back to Top Becker

LEICESTER, Mass. – Lesley University overcame a sweep of doubles to rally past Becker College 5-4 in New England Collegiate Conference women's tennis action Saturday afternoon. The win lifts the Lynx record to 3-4 (2-2 NECC), while the Hawks fall to 2-7 (1-3 NECC).

Cameron Murphy (Weymouth, Mass.) paired up with Anna Pilip (New Britain, Conn.) to take top doubles action over Grace Ciampa (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Emma True (Lee, N.H.), 8-5. Murphy also captured Becker's only victory in singles action with a win over Carissa Iverson (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), 6-3, 6-4.  In number two doubles action, the Becker tandem of Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield Calif.) and Shauna Buckley (Danvers, Mass.) defeated Victoria Bunker (Auburn, Maine) and Frances De Leon (Murrieta, Calif.), 8-1. Becker completed the clean sweep of doubles when Lily Woodward-Logan (Berkeley, Calif.) and Chenylle Mercado (Tyngsborough, Mass.) clawed past Kaitlin Parthum (Hardwick, Mass.) and Kelly Watt (Babylon, N.Y.), 8-6.

Singles action proved to be a completely different story as Lesley won the final five matches of the day to stun the Hawks. In number two doubles play, Grace Ciampa played a strong forehand and avenged her doubles loss by defeating Anna Pilip in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.  Victoria Bunker scratched her way to a victory in number three singles with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Kerry Saltvick.  In arguably the most thrilling match of the day, Frances De Leon outlasted Shauna Buckley in number four singles 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. After dropping sets in both third and fourth singles, the Lynx were down to their last set, before coming back to win.

Emma True tied the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Woodward-Logan in number five singles. The Lynx completed the improbable comeback when Meghann Toomajian (Nahant, Mass.) nailed down number six singles, defeating Chenylle Mercado, 7-6, 6-1.

Becker returns to the court on Tuesday, October 1 when they host NECC rival Regis College at 3:00 p.m. Lesley's next match is on Thursday, October 3 when they travel to Regis College at 5:00 p.m.
