Leopards Too Much for Women's Tennis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The season-opener for the Lesley women's tennis team was spoiled tonight as the Wentworth Leopards swept the Lynx 9-0 at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. Wentworth improves to 2-1 on the young season while the Lynx kick start the 2013 season at 0-1.

Wentworth sophomore Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) got the night started off right for the Leopards, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the first singles flight while junior Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.) also posted a shutout at No. 4 singles. Senior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) took second singles as she topped Lynx freshman Grace Ciampa (Tewksbury, Mass.) 6-1, 6-0.

Leopards junior Marisa Page (Warwick, R.I.) held off Lynx sophomore Victoria Bunker (Auburn, Me.) in a tough match at No. 5 singles. Page took the first set 6-2 and hung on for the second with a 7-5 tiebreak win.

Moving into doubles, Corcoran and Ofer teamed up for an 8-2 victory over Lesley juniors Emma True (Lee, N.H.) and Molly Phelps (Durham, N.H.) in the top slot while Nicole McClogan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Massaro also took an 8-2 in No. 2 doubles.  Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.) and Jessica Simms (Deep River, Conn.) bested Lynx freshmen Kaitlin Parthum (Hardwick, Mass.) and Kelly Watt in the third singles match, 8-1.

The Leopards will look to extend their current win-streak to three games when they open up Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Nichols College on Saturday, September 7th at 11:30a. The Lynx will get back to action on Monday, September 9th when they play host to Anna Maria College. The match is slated for a 7:30p start at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols.
