CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Newbury upended Lesley, 6-3, in both teams' New England Collegiate Conference opener Saturday evening at the Nicholas Athletics Center.

The teams split in singles play, 3-3, but the Nighthawks (2-3, 1-0) swept the Lynx (0-3, 0-1) by a 3-0 count in double competition.

Newbury's Sarah Harris and Julia MacLeod earned victories in second and fourth singles, respectively, and teamed for a second doubles win by sweeping Hannah Phalen and Emma True 8-0.

Alexandra Derderian also earned two points for Newbury, beating Meghann Toomanjian 8-0 and teaming with Jennifer Swafford for an 8-4 win over Katie Side and Brenna Donovan.

For the Lynx, Side came back to knock off Swafford 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in top singles, while Emma True and Jillian Clarke earned victories in fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

Lesley returns to play, continuing its NECC slate at Regis on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
