CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Lesley University women's tennis team competed in their first ever New England Collegiate Conference match against Newbury College and nearly pulled out a victory, losing to the Nighthawks 5-4.

Both Lesley and Newbury started off in doubles play as the Lynx took two out of the three doubles matches.  The Lynx lost the number one doubles match 2-8, but the number two doubles duo of Courtney Mullen (SPRINGFIELD, Ore./Marist) and Jillian Zingale (HUNTINGTON, N.Y./Harborfields) won 9-7 and number three doubles partners Lily McCausland (MAD RIVER VALLEY, Vt./Harwood Union) and Caroline Cingari (STAMFORD, Conn./Westhill) also won 8-4.

In singles play, however, Lesley was only able to pull off victories in number one singles and number six singles.

Mullen battled hard to defeat her opponent in the number one singles match 7-5, 7-5 while Emily Lapean (MONTAGUE, Mass./Turner Falls) pulled off a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2 tiebreaker) victory.

After losing four singles matches, the Lynx were unable to defeat Newbury.

The following day, Lesley traveled to Emmanuel College but was defeated by the highly-talented Saints squad by a score of 9-0.

Lesley competes in their second NECC match on Tuesday, September 22 at Becker College starting at 4:00 pm.
