THE LEAD In a game with six combined goals, the Lesley University women's soccer team tied Maine Maritime Academy 3-3 in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lesley was able to get on the board first a little over 20 minutes (22:29) into the opening half when Lily Wright (Haymarket, Va.) got away from her defender and then sent a crossing pass from the right side of the box to Kylie Chagnon (Framingham, Mass.) who put her shot past Mariners goalie Isa Thesing on a one-timer.
  • However, the Mariners responded 16 minutes later at the 38:10 mark when Maya Brown had an off-balance cross pass on the right side of the Lesley net that found Kirra Magana in front of the Lynx net. From there, she kicked back her pass to an open Charlotte Manes on the left side of the box, who rifled her shot past a diving Lauren Lacy (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and evened things at one.
  • Going into the second half knotted at one, the Mariners broke the 1-1 tie when Magana drew a foul near the top of the goalie box. She found the back of the net when her free kick found an open spot in the top middle of the goal and just out of Lacy's reach.
  • Once again, the Lynx's resiliency kept the squad in the game, and Zoe Curtaz (Novato, Calif.) tied the game at two after there was a clutter in front of the Mariners' net. She then took advantage of an out-of-place Thesing and snuck her shot past the Maine Maritime netminder.
  • In a game where each team matched the other, the Mariners retook the lead later in the second after Maya Brown corraled a loose ball from a collision between Magana and Lacy to make it 3-2.
  • As the game started to wind down, Lesley was able to once again even the contest in the 84th minute thanks to a goal by Lauren Rudolph (Winchester, Va.)Rudolph was set up nicely by Abby Kalou (Chicago, Ill.) after she broke away from two Maine Maritime defenders past midfield. She sent her pass on a line to a running Rudolph inside the goalie box and put her shot past a sliding Thesing.
  • Thanks to strong defense and goaltending the rest of the way, Lesley was able to grab a point in the 3-3 draw against Maine Maritime.
