Landerholm, Lynx pull away from Mariners with strong second

NEW LONDON, CT -- Lesley broke a scoreless halftime tie with three second half goals in topping Mitchell, 3-0 Wednesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer play.

Lesley dominated possession on the day, earning all eight of the game's corner kicks and outshooting the Mariners 33-0. Still, the teams went into halftime in a scoreless tie in spite of a 15-0 Lynx advantage on shots through 45 minutes thanks to five Kaylee Woodford first half saves.

Sophomore Hannah Landerholm opened the scoring with her first goal as a Lynx, getting the better of Woodford for an unassisted tally at 56:35. Junior Sarah Apgar added an insurance goal, also unassisted, for her seventh of the season at 64:24, and Samantha Rapant spotted Kelsey Fitzgerald for a shot inside the far post in rounding out the scoring in the 85th minute.

In addition to landing her first career goal going as the eventual game-winner, Landerholm led all players with a career-high seven shots, lifting the first-place Lynx to 13-2-2 and 7-0 in NECC play.

For the Mariners, now 3-9-0 and 3-5-0 in the NECC, Woodford made 13 saves in net. Lynx keepers Emileigh Lloyd and Jackie Berard combined on the shutout.

Lesley returns to play on Saturday, honoring its senior class on Senior Night at 7:00 p.m. against Daniel Webster.
