Lynx improve to 5-0 after 4-0 shutout of Nighthawks

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Lesley University improved to 10-1-2 and 5-0-0 in conference play with a 4-0 win over visiting Newbury College Sunday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer play.

            Junior Veronica Halen (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) got the Lynx on the board at 18:17, taking a Kelsey Fitzgerald (Upton, MA/Nipmuc) cross deep in the box and sending a shot past Nighthawks keeper Ashleigh Guy for her team-leading seventh goal. Lesley outshot Newbury 20-0 for the half, but went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

             Senior Courtney Hopkins (Watertown, MA/Watertown) doubled the lead at 50:57, besting Guy on Alexis Giusti's (Meridian, CA/Yuba City) team-leading seventh assist. The Lynx added an insurance goal at 79:07, when Fitzgerald capitalized on an Ashley Blaess (Protsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) free kick for the senior's second goal.

            Freshman Isabella Vidana (San Marcos, CA/Cathedral Catholic) added a diving header from the middle of the box off of a Melinda Robinson (Plano, TX/Frisco) corner kick in the 90th minute, making it a 4-0 final.

            The Lynx outshot Newbury 37-0 for the game, with three different goalkeepers combining on the shutout. For the Nighthawks (1-8-0, 0-5-0), Guy made 19 saves in net.

            Lesley returns to the court on Wednesday, playing host to Regis College in NECC action at 8:00 p.m.
