Upset-minded Lynx fall short against Wheaton

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Lesley University women's soccer was thinking upset after taking an early 1-0 advantage and leading for much of the first half, but Wheaton (9-1-1) answered in a big way, scoring three unanswered goals late in the period, winning 3-1 Thursday night at Edward Field.

Lesley (4-4-2) came out poised to get on the board early against the No. 30 team in the nation, peppering Lyons goalkeeper Kerry Condon (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson) with the game's first four shots. For Paul Vasconcelos' Lynx, the fourth time was the charm.

Forward Jenna Fralick (Woburn, MA/Woburn) fired a blast off an Ally Durben corner kick off Condon's hand at 7:11 into to the top left corner of the net from ten feet. Durben's sixth assist led to Fralick's team-leading fourth goal and a 1-0 Lynx lead.

As quickly as the Lynx grasped momentum out of the gate, the Lyons recaptured it almost immediately. Wheaton took 10 of the half's last 15 shots over the final 28:00, scoring three times in the last 15:00 in taking a 3-1 halftime lead.

Midfielder Jessica Stuart (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) tied the contest at 31:55 on an unassisted bouncing ball in front of the net and struck again less than three minutes later on a line drive into the top of the net from 25 yards away.

After Stuart's third and fourth goals of 2010, Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) added some unassisted insurance at 39:21, putting Wheaton on top 3-1 at the intermission.

That, after a scoreless second half in which the Lynx put three shots on goal to one for Wheaton, was the final. Vasconcelos' club worked a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks in the second – and a 6-1 total for the game – but could not capitalize after Fralick's early score, falling for the third time in four matches.

Stuart led all players with six shots, four on goal. Emily Vincunas (Granville, MA/Wilbraham & Monson) tallied an assist on Stuart's second score.

For the game, the visitors outshot Lesley 16-14, with Corrine Dasti (Eastham, MA/Nauset) made a season-high seven saves in goal for the Lynx. At the other end, Condon stopped six for the Lyons.

Lesley returns to New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday, traveling to Elms at 1 p.m. Wheaton returns to its MASCAC schedule, playing host to Mount Holyoke, also at 1:00.
