THE LEAD – A pair of pretty pitching performances powered Plymouth State past Lesley, 9-0 & 7-1, Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division III Softball action at Ardagna Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • Sophomore Lauren Laudani tossed the Game 1 gem, allowing just one hit over five innings of work to earn her first win of the year in a complete-game shutout effort, striking out four.
  • PSU got all the runs it would need in the top of the first as Kenzie Bessette led off the game with a single up the middle before collecting two stolen bases and coming in to score on a wild pitch to give the Panthers the 1-0 edge.
  • K. Bessette made it 3-0 with a two-RBI double to left-center in the second and came around to make it 4-0 on an RBI single up the middle by sister Emily Bessette to bump the lead to 4-0.
  • Mia Ly belted a solo homer in the third to move the score to 5-0 before Plymouth State pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the fourth to make it a 7-0 contest.
  • In the fifth, Lilly Vetelino connected on a pinch-hit RBI single to get the game to run-rule territory at 8-0 before E. Bessette added an insurance run with another RBI single up the middle to account for the 9-0 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Six different Panthers finished the game with two hits including both Bessette sisters, Avery Couch, Ly, Abbey Nezuch and Kaity Montelongo.
  • PSU out-hit the Lynx by a 14-1 margin with the only Lesley hit coming from sophomore first baseman Lauren Martin in the second on a hot-shot single down the left field line.
  • LU junior hurler Madison Herbert (1-7) suffered the loss, striking out a pair in the outing.
  • The victory in the circle for Laudani (1-0) is the first of her collegiate career.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • PSU got the strong Game 2 outing by Mackenzie Griswold (2-0), hurling a complete-game three-hitter while allowing just one run (unearned) to go along with six K's.
  • The Panthers jumped out to another early lead with a run in the first on an RBI single to right by Kennedy Michaud and added two more in the second to bump the score to 3-0.
  • Keelie Wells' RBI double in the third moved things to 4-0 before the game settled into a pitcher's duel for the middle frames as Griswold and LU sophomore Isabella Moscoso put up zeros in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • The squads traded runs in the sixth as Mia Paligo registered a pinch hit RBI double to left center in the top of the frame. Moscoso led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, moved into scoring position on a double to right by Leah St. John before coming in for Lesley's first run of the day on a PSU miscue to make it 5-1.
  • The Panthers capped the day's scoring in a rainy seventh, highlighted by a two-RBI double to left by Michaud to account for the 7-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)

  • Michaud paced the Panthers offensive output with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with three RBI in the win.
  • St. John, Jessica O'Neill, and Herbert all finished game two with a hit.
  • Moscoso reached based twice for the Lynx on a pair of walks and scored the lone Lesley run in the setback. She also tossed a complete-game in the circle, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits while recording a career-high five K's.
