THE LEAD – Lesley University was blanked by Alverno College and Alfred State College on Friday morning in NCAA Division III softball action at the Gene Cusic Classic in Naples, Fla. The Inferno posted a 4-0 win over LU before the Pioneers shutout Lesley by a 9-0 final in five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1 vs. Alverno)
- Back to back triples by the Inferno in the fourth inning broke a scoreless affair as Giselle Moreno and Dominique Tetrault both connected for three-baggers to right, and scoring the first two runs of the game to put Alverno on top, 2-0.
- The Inferno doubled the lead to 4-0 in the fifth, putting together three consecutive singles to push across their third and fourth runs of the action which proved to be more than enough for first year starting pitcher Bailey Garnder who picked up the complete-game shutout victory in her collegiate debut.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1 – Alverno)
- Gardner tossed the shutout working 7.0 innings and scattered six hits while surrendering just one walk to go along with three K's to move to 1-0 on the campaign.
- Moreno finished the game going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Alyssa Hubli also posted a 2-for-3 line with a run.
- Six different Lynx posted singles in the setback including the first collegiate hit for junior outfielder Madalynn Biagi.
- Madison Herbert (0-4) threw well in defeat, scattering seven hits over 6.0 innings and strikeout out a career-high nine.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2 vs. Alfred State)
- The Pioneers got all the run support they'd need in the first inning, pushing a pair across to take a 2-0 lead.
- Alfred State broke it open with a four-run third to move its lead to 6-0, collecting just two hits and taking advantage of an LU miscue to start to pull away. They'd go on to add three more in the fourth highlighted by a two-RBI single from Nicole Youngberg to make it 9-0, which proved to be the final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2 – Alfred State)
- Marissa Ordway (2-3) picked up the win, throwing 5.0 shutout innings, surrendering just three hits while striking out three.
- Youngberg and Trinity Scott each finished with two hits each for Alfred State.
- Emma Hodgkins (1-3) suffered the loss for Lesley despite a six strikeout performance.
