THE LEAD – Lesley University opened the 2025 softball campaign with a pair of setbacks on opening day at the hands of Geneva College and SUNY Potsdam. The Golden Tornadoes cruised past the Lynx in the season-opener, 11-2 in five innings, before the Bears pulled away late in a 9-3 final in the second game of the morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1 vs. Geneva)

  • The Lynx put its first two runners of the campaign on as sophomore shortstop Isabella Moscoso drew a leadoff walk followed by sophomore third baseman Leah St. John getting hit by a pitch to put two on with no out in the first. McKenzie Rapp worked out of the early jam to keep LU off the board and turn it over to the Golden Tornadoes bats who struck for a pair in the bottom of the frame on two hits to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Geneva exploded for eight runs in the second inning to build a commanding 10-0 lead highlighted by a pair of two-run homers by A Ottaviani and M Shelley.
  • Lesley got on the board in the third as Moscoso scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore first baseman Lauren Martin to make it 10-1.
  • The Golden Tornadoes got the run back in the bottom of the frame to bump the lead to 11-1 before Martin doubled home Moscoso in the fifth to account for the 11-2 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1 – Geneva)

  • Geneva outhit the Lynx, 12-6, in the season-opener paced by two-hit outings from Lexi Zanic and Justine Robbins who both went 2-for-2 with Zanic added two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Martin lead LU offensively with the extra base hit while driving in both runs.
  • Jess O'Neill, Rori Allen and Sydney McAvoy all picked up singles in the setback including the first collegiate base hit for both Allen and McAvoy.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2 vs. SUNY Potsdam)

  • The Bears broke open a tight one-run game in the sixth inning, plating five runs to jump out to an 8-2 edge over Lesley. Four of the five runs were unearned as the Lynx committed three costly errors in the frame.
  • Potsdam scored twice in the first inning to sprint out to a 2-0 cushion as Alexys Rosick and Kaylee Dobransky connected on back-to-back triples, both scoring to account for the early lead.
  • LU graduate student Jess O'Neill drove in Lesley's first run of the game in the second to cut the lead in half at 2-1 but SUNY answered in the third on an RBI single to right by Danielle Moscarell to make it 3-1.
  • In the fourth, the Lynx loaded the bases but the Bears were able to escape by surrendering just one run on an RBI fielder's choice from McAvoy, driving home senior pitcher Emma Hodgkins to make it 3-2. Junior Madalynn Biagi laced a ball to the right side of the infield, but the line drive was snagged to end the inning and preserve the one-run lead for the Bears.
