Softball Crushes Elms in Sunday Sweep; 15-5 & 9-1

THE LEAD – Lesley University exploded for a combined 24 runs to power past host Elms College, 15-5 (6 inn.) and 9-1 (5 inn.) for a non-conference Sunday sweep at Cheryl Condon Field.     

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • The Lynx opened the action with five runs in the first to set the tone for the day before Elms answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to keep it tight early at 5-4.
  • LU put three more on the board in the third including an RBI double by Sydney Cole to double up the Blazers at 8-4.
  • Elms immediately got one back in the bottom of the third move the score to 8-5 on an RBI single by Sarah Fortini but it was the last run of the game for the home side as Lesley cruised over the final few innings, outscoring EC 7-0 to end the game early on account of the run-rule, 15-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Every player in the Lynx order reached base in the win as the squad combined for a season-high 16 hits including a 4-for-4 game by Leah St. John in which the rookie also scored four runs.
  • LU pitcher Samantha Mecklenburg not only earned the complete-game win in the circle but helped her cause at the plate with a 3-for-4 day with an RBI and run scored.
  • Cole, MJ Jones and Lauren Martin all finished the game with two hits each while Martin added a game-high four RBI.
  • Kaelyn Zakaitis paced the Blazers going 3-for-3 with an RBI and run while Fortini finished with two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • Lesley struck first with a pair in the first to take the lead for good including a bases loaded walk by Martin to make it 2-0 early.
  • The Lynx doubled the lead to 4-0 with two more in the second fueled by an RBI double by Kari Sorensen.
  • A five-run third blew the game open to a 9-0 score highlighted by another Sorensen extra base knock, a bases-cleared three-RBI triple.
  • Elms avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Amanda Raymond to account for the 9-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sorensen finished the game with a monster 4-for-4 line with four RBI and a run scored.
  • Isabella Moscoso also enjoyed a strong performance going 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
  • Emma Hodgkins earned the win in the circle scattering five hits over five innings, striking out a pair.
  • Raymond and Caity Flynn each finished two hits to star for the Blazers.

 UP NEXT

  • Lesley is idle until Friday, March 30 for their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener when they play host to Thomas College at Griswold Park in Revere, Mass. at 3:00 PM.
  • Elms takes on Bay Path on Tuesday, March 26 for an afternoon doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
