Mercurio, Knox, Fountain receive NECC weekly honors

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- New England Collegiate Conference Tournament MVP Nicole Mercurio was named NECC Player of the Week, All-Tournament Team member Cassandra Knox was named Pitcher of the Week, and for a second straight week, catcher Allison Fountain was named  Rookie of the Week.

A part of an explosive Lynx lineup that averaged over eight runs per game in the team's three NECC Tournament wins, Mercurio's star shined the brightest, as the sophomore homered and drove in three runs in all three contests. In Lesley's 11-3 championship win over Daniel Webster on Saturday, Mercurio went 3-for-3, lining a two-out, three-run first-inning home run to left that set the tone for another title and landed the left fielder on her second All-Tournament Team in as many seasons.

Knox went 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA on the week, hurling the Lynx to a fourth championship in her four years. She struck out six in a five-inning shutout of Daniel Webster on Thursday and came back to hold the Eagles scoreless into the fifth inning in Saturday's championship game, allowing only a late three-run triple in improving to 10-5 on the year.

Fountain slugged .875 while catching all three games of the Lynx NECC Championship sweep over the weekend. In Friday's semifinals win over Daniel Webster, the sophomore enjoyed one of her finest games of the season, homering, doubling and driving in four with a 3-for-4 day at the plate in the 9-0 win.

Mercurio and Fountain received their awards for a second week in a row, with Fountain's Rookie of the Week award serving as her third of the season.

The Lynx now prepare for Thursday's NCAA Tournament matchup with nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University, the bracket's top seed and the No. 2 team in the country.
