Sophomores Mercurio, Fountain win NECC weekly honors

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Lesley sophomores Nicole Mercurio and Allison Fountain were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday, the prior with her first-ever Player of the Week award and Fountain with her second Rookie of the Week award.

Mercurio homered in consecutive wins for the Lynx, hitting a solo shot in her team's shutout of Wheelock on Wednesday, going 2-for-2 with four runs scored and four walks. A day later, she crushed a towering two-run blast in Lesley's blanking of Daniel Webster, going 2-for-3 with a homer, a triple, two runs scored and three driven in. In Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Bay Path, she went 2-for-6 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI's.

In her four games played on the week, the sophomore was 6-for-11 (.545) with nine runs scored, five RBI's, two home runs, four walks and a mammoth 1.467 slugging percentage.

Playing all five of Lesley's games behind the plate in the Lynx 5-0 week, Fountain hit .588 with a triple, a stolen base and two walks. In the team's first three games on the week, she scored eight runs and drove in 10.

For the week, she hit 10-for-17 (.588) with 10 RBI's, catching two one-hitters, a three-hitter and a pair of four-hitters.

At 25-10 overall and having finished 18-0 in NECC play for a second straight year, Lesley will host the NECC Tournament at Wellesley College. The Lynx have earned a first round bye and will play the winner of Tuesday's No. 5 Bay Path at No. 4 Elms game on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
