First place Lynx fire past Pride with pair of gems

WESTON, MA – Lesley University got a complete game three-hitter from Game 1 starter Jennifer Dorval and a two-hit shutout from Game 2 starter Cassandra Knox, beating Regis College 4-1 and 16-0 Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference softball play.

Dorval (Franklin, NH/Franklin) struck out the first five batters she faced and 17 in all, a new career high, fanning the side four times and allowing a seventh-inning run as her only blemish in improving to 8-1 on the season.

Knox (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore), meanwhile, struck out three in her five-inning shutout, giving up two hits and a pair of walks in her fifth win of the year as the Lynx improved to 14-8 and 7-0 in NECC play.

Lesley pushed three across in the third thanks to three Regis errors. Molly Sarson (Sanford, ME/Sanford) and Jenna Fralick (Woburn, MA/Woburn) each reached on errors to open the inning, with Sarson scoring on an Emily Mangiaratti (Amherst, MA/Amherst) infield single. With two outs, Fralick and Mangiaratti scored on a Dorval single to left, giving herself more than enough of a cushion at 3-0.

She struck out the side in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings, holding the Pride hitless through four. Dorval allowed two base hits in all, with Regis' Katie Blackburn (Milford, MA/Milford) going 1-for-3 and scoring the team's only run.

In Game 2, Mangiaratti scored the Lynx first run all the way from first base on a Sarson bunt followed by two Pride errors. Dorval doubled home catcher Allison Fountain (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire), scored on a Gabrielle Brixey (Coalinga, CA/West Hills CC) line out to center, and Fralick capped a six-run first with a two-run double to left.

Brixey drove in Fountain with a RBI single to go ahead 7-0 in the second, and Lesley scored six runs on a single hit and four Regis errors in the third, going up 13-0 and going on to win 16-0.

Mangiaratti went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Fountain also scored three times, and Brixey scored twice and drove in two.

Blackburn went 1-for-2 for Regis in the nightcap, collecting two of the team's five hits on the day.

Both teams return to NECC play tomorrow, with Lesley traveling to Elms and Regis going to Newbury.
