Guevara goes yard to lead softball sweep of Newbury

WALTHAM, MA -- Junior Jessica Guevara enjoyed a career day, going a combined 6-for-9 with her first career home run in Lesley's sweep of Newbury, 8-5 and 15-0, Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference softball play.

The second base player's solo home run ignited a four-run fifth-inning rally that made a winner out of starter Cassandra Knox in Game 1 and doubled and scored in support of NECC Pitcher of the Week Jennifer Dorval, who fired a two-hit shutout in Game 2.

Good things came in threes on Saturday for Jen Benway's club. Senior Jenna Fralick went a combined 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI's, Dorval went 5-for-8 with three runs scored, three driven in and three doubles, and freshman Jodee Doka collected her first three-hit game as a Lynx, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the nightcap.

Newbury posted a three-spot of its own early on, as a pair of walks preceded a three-run Rebecca Roach home run off Knox in the first inning of the opener. The Nighthawks 3-0 lead held until the fourth, when Molly Sarson doubled home Maria Nazzaro and Allison Fountain to pull within a run.

Leading off the fifth, Guevara took Roach deep for a solo homer that tied the game, and four batters later, Gabrielle Brixey doubled home Dorval. Fountain, who reached on a Roach error, scored on a passed ball, and Sarson singled in Brixey to cap the four-run rally that ultimately gave the Lynx the lead for good.

Roach pulled the Nighthawks within one with a two-run homer off reliever Mary Dembinski in the bottom half of the inning, but Dembinski settled down and another passed ball and a Guevara RBI single added some late-inning insurance in the Lynx 8-5 win.

Knox allowed three runs, all earned, in her four innings, walking four and striking out five. Dembinski allowed two runs, one earned, all on Roach's second home run, walking none and fanning four over three innings in securing victory with her second save of the season.

The Lynx pounced on Game 2 starter Nicole Cuneo early and often, with Brixey scoring Dorval and Fountain with a two-run double in the first.  An inning later, Dorval doubled home Fountain to go ahead 5-0 before Lesley exploded for seven in the third.

An error and a pair of singles loaded the bases with no outs for Fralick, who cleared them with a three-run double. Dorval then doubled home two, and RBI singles from Brixey and Sarson made it a 12-0 game as the Lynx went on to win 15-0.

Dorval allowed only a leadoff single in the first and a fourth-inning double, holding the Nighthawks to two hits, striking out eight and walking none in her five-inning shutout.

At 10-7 and 4-0 in NECC play, Lesley travels to Lasell on Wednesday for a non-league double dip starting at 3:00 p.m.
