Getting offensive: Lynx leading nation in runs scored

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- It's not so much that Lesley just completed its second seven-game winning streak of the season in the team's undefeated week last week.

It's how they're winning games: outscoring opponents by dozens of runs, posting football-like final scores and getting contributions from the top to the bottom in a lineup that now leads the nation in runs per game.

After the week in which Lesley outscored its opponents by a shocking combined score of 126-2, the Lynx jumped from 67th nationally to first place at 10.04 runs per game, moving from 38th to second place with a .411 team batting average.

"That's ridiculous," catcher Molly Sarson, who's hitting .526 over her team's seven-game winning streak, said of her team's offensive performance.

A prolific offense is nothing new for Lesley, as the Lynx led the New England Collegiate Conference in both batting (.340) and runs per game (6.75) in 2010. Sarson says it's the team's depth, which saw 10 players insanely hit above .450 last week, when six different Lynx homered, that marks the difference between last year's conference champion and this year's first-place club that ranks among national leaders in several categories.

"I think this year, the entire lineup is hitting and getting on base," the sophomore said. "Last year it was a chunk of the lineup. It wasn't the entire lineup."

According to the numbers, Sarson would be correct in applauding her team's depth. Leadoff hitter Emily Mangiaratti leads the NECC with 31 runs scored, last week's NECC Rookie of the Week Jennifer Dorval leads league with a .613 batting average, current NECC Player of the Week Gabrielle Brixey is in the league's Top 6 in batting (.438), runs (25) and hits (28) and No. 9 hitter Maria Nazzaro is 12th in the league in batting, at .383.

The depth extends to coach Jen Benway's bench, as two of the team's three leading hitters on its 7-0 week were reserves. Senior Chelsea Quackenbush, who entered the week 2-for-10 on the season, went 7-for-10 (.700) with two triples last week, and freshman Nicole Mercurio, who owned all of six college at-bats entering the week, collected eight hits in 12 at-bats, including her first triple and home run. With a robust .750 (9-for-12) batting average through the team's first eight NECC games, Mercurio leads all hitters in the conference in league games.

With seven of the 13 top hitters in the league, Lesley's is as deep of an attack as there is. Below is how the Lynx offense stands among the national leaders:
