WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Backed by a no-hitter from first-year Sarah Schwartzmeyer (Elba, NY), the Wellesley College softball team posted a doubleheader sweep over Lesley University in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon in Wellesley. The Blue eeked out a 7-6 win in the opener and then Schwartzmeyer did not allow a Lynx hit in a five-inning, 10-1 Wellesley victory in game two. The sweep improves Wellesley to 21-5 on the season, while Lesley falls to 10-8.

Wellesley took a first-inning lead in game one, when Jesse Haladyna (St. John's, FL) scored on a wild pitch and Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL) drove in a run with a double. Wood then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mara Blesoff (Oak Park, IL) to give the Blue a 3-0 lead. Lesley rebounded in the fourth, capitalizing on two walks and singles from Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, MA) and Molly Sarson (Sanford, ME), along with a sacrifice fly from Ashley Cunningham (Mountain Top, PA) to tie the game at 3-3.

Wellesley seemed to take control of the game in the top of the sixth, when Haladyna led off with a walk and advanced to third on a bunt single from Ilana Orloff (Weston, MA). After Orloff stole second, Wood's single to center plated two to give the Blue a 5-3 lead.

The Lynx responded with a three-run, two-out rally in the top of seventh to take a 6-5 lead. After Cunningham led off the inning with a single up the middle, Wellesley retired the next two batters. But a single from Emily Mangiaratti (Amherst, MA), followed by a wild pitch, put runners on second and third. A single from Jessica Guevara (Nantucket, MA) trimmed the lead to one run, then a single from Alyson Durben (Stow, MA) gave the Lynx a 7-6 lead.

But in the bottom of the inning the Blue used a walk, a double off the bat of Lauren Goldfarb (Albuquerque, NM), and a Lesley miscue to tie the game at 6-6. Then a perfectly executed squeeze bunt from Orloff scored Goldfarb for the game-winner.

Mangiaratti led the Lesley attack in game one, going 3-for-4. Durben and Sarson added one hit each, while also driving in two RBI a piece. Cassandra Knox (Sea Cliff, NY) took the loss for the Lynx, giving up eight hits and seven runs, while falling to 6-5 for the season.

For the Blue, Wood was 2-for-4 with three RBI.  Orloff was 2-for-3 while knocking in the game-winning run. Wood went 6.2 innings on the mound, fanning 10 while allowing seven hits and six runs. Goldfarb came on to snag the win, improving her record to 9-3.

To open game two, Lesley used a walk, a Blue error, a wild pitch and a fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After that, it was all Blue. Wellesley tallied three runs in the first inning, three in the second, and two each in the third and fourth innings to take a 10-1, five-inning win.

Wellesley's Schwartzmeyer was stellar in the circle, striking out seven while walking four in the first no-hitter of her college career. The first-year hurler is now 7-0 for the season. Haladyna led the Blue offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Blesoff added a two-run single and Samantha Spiga (Perth Amboy, NJ) chipped in a double and two RBI.

Knox took the loss for the Lynx, giving up 10 runs, seven earned, while allowing nine hits.

The Lynx take the field again on Wednesday, April 14, when they travel to Emmanuel College for a 7:00pm match-up. The Blue return to action on Wednesday at 3:00pm, when they host Bridgewater State.
