BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Lesley University softball team faced non-conference opponent Babson College this afternoon and lost twice, dropping their season record to 7-6. Babson improved 14-8 overall and extended their winning streak to 10 games.
Game One
Babson first-year starter Megan Brain (POMPTON PLAINS, N.J./Pequannock Township) allowed just one run on four hits, walking one and striking out four as the Beavers won 9-1 in six innings. The win improved her record to 7-2.
Lesley plated their only run of the game in the top of sixth with two outs as freshman Emily Mangiaratti (AMHERST, Mass./Amherst Regional) drew a two-out walk and scored from first on a double to center by fellow freshman Jessica Guevara (NANTUCKET, Mass./Nantucket).
Babson, already with a 5-1 advantage, scored four more runs in the bottom half of the inning to win in six. Doubles by Lisa Wojnar (BELLAIRE, Texas/Episcopal) and Catie Funk (SCARBOROUGH, Maine/Scarborough) both brought in a run and a two-run single by sophomore Nicole Latini (EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) capped off the game.
Lynx sophomore Cassandra Knox (SEA CLIFF, N.Y./North Shore) pitched the first four innings and suffered the loss while senior Jodi Fralick (WOBURN, Mass./Woburn) went 2-for-3 to pace the offense.
Game Two
Babson took the lead in the third inning of game two on a two-run double to the gap in right center by Kayla Davis (GARDNER, Mass./Gardner). Funk added a two-run double in the fourth inning to make it 4-0 and freshman Ashleigh Phelps (WEST CHESTER, Pa./West Chester East) knocked in a run via fielder's choice as part of a Beavers' two-run fifth inning as the hosts built a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Lynx got on the board after Guevara hit an RBI single to center and Fralick followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 6-2. Babson, however, would hold on for the 6-2 victory.
Knox was on the mound for five innings in game two, shouldering the loss, but Molly Sarson (SANFORD, Maine/Sanford) came on in relief and pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Lesley will be back in action on Thursday, April 8 for their home opener against Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponent Lasell College for one game starting at 3:30 pm.
