Emily Mangiaratti named NECC Rookie of the Week

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

PLAYER OF THE WEEK —Newbury College senior outside hitter Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the Nighthawks to their first New England Collegiate Conference Men's Volleyball Championship title. Thomas was named the tournament MVP for his efforts. He tallied 63 kills on the week averaging 4.2 kills per set with a .344 attack percentage. Thomas also averaged 2.06 digs per set and .93 blocks per set. Newbury went 3-1 on the week including the semifinal win against Elms 3-0 and a 3-0 win against Daniel Webster in the championship match.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK —Elms College sophomore setter Mike Martin (Enfield, Conn.) helped the Blazers to a 1-2 week, while recently being named the 2010 NECC Rookie of the Year. Martin dished out 60 assists averaging 6.67 per set. Martin also averaged 1.89 digs per set and .44 blocks per set, while hitting .533 on the week.

MEN'S TENNIS

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mitchell College sophomore Kyle Carmona (Norwich, Conn.) opened up the 2010 season leading the Mariners to a 9-0 NECC victory over Newbury. Carmona defeated Nicholas Sehovich 6-0, 6-2 at the #1 singles position. He teamed with Rocco Devona to shut-out Sehovich and Ryan Sevieri 8-0 in doubles action.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Mitchell College freshman Rocco Devona (Waterford, Conn.) launched his collegiate career at the #2 singles and #1 doubles going undefeated for the week. Devona defeated Ryan Sevieri 6-1, 6-3, while pairing with Carmona to take the doubles match 8-0 against Newbury in conference action.

SOFTBALL

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bay Path College senior shortstop Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.) batted .571 (12-for-21) while leading the Wildcats to a 3-3 week.  Gates had two doubles, six runs and seven RBI's.  She slugged .667, fielded .944 and had a .571 on-base percentage. She also went 5-for-5 in stolen bases.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Mitchell College sophomore Kristina Torres (Groton, Conn.) hurled five innings in a 12-2 victory over Lyndon State in the Mariners home opener. She allowed only two runs, both unearned, on four hits. Torres fanned five and walked only one batter picking up her first win on the season.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Lesley University freshman outfielder Emily Mangiaratti (Amherst, Mass.) led the Lynx to a 2-0 sweep of Regis winning the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 7-5. Mangiaratti reached base five times of her eight at bats. She slugged one triple for a .625 batting average, .875 slugging percent and .625 on-base percentage. Mangiaratti had a perfect fielding percentage.

BASEBALL

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – For the second straight week, Mitchell College junior infielder Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn.) led the Mariners to a 2-0 week defeating Lyndon State 9-0 and 7-2. Perillo batted .571 while slugging a 1.000 percentage. He had five RBI and four hits including one double and one triple.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Mitchell College senior Jeremy Chapman (Waterford, Conn.) hurled a complete game shut-out allowing only one hit in a 9-0 win over Lyndon State. Chapman fanned a season-high nine batters. He did not let a runner past second base. He has kept a 0.00 ERA in the last 13.0 inning pitched.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Mitchell College freshman pitcher Garrett Cornwell (Oxford, Conn.) helped the Mariners to a 7-2 victory over Lyndon State improving to 2-0 on the season. Cornwell allowed two runs on three hits in 6.0 innings of work. He struck-out a career-high nine batters and gave up five walks. Cornwell finished with a 3.00 ERA.
