Softball finishes regular season tied for first place

FARMINGTON, Me. - Following a split with UMaine-Farmington on Sunday, the Lesley University softball team finished the regular season in a three-way tie for first place in the North Atlantic Conference.  It was the first time in the program's history that the Lynx have ever had a taste of the NAC regular season title as they finished with a 25-9 (17-3 NAC) record.

Despite finishing tied for first place in the conference, the Lynx will be the number two seed heading into the playoffs.  Husson College, to who Lesley lost two games earlier in the season, will be the top seed followed by the Lynx, then Thomas College.

The NAC Quarterfinals will begin on Tuesday April 29 with the Lynx facing off against Bay Path College at home.  Lesley swept Bay Path on April 5 by the scores of 5-0 and 13-0.  Game time has not yet been determined.

On Sunday, Lesley needed to sweep UMaine-Farmington in order to be in sole possession of first place in the NAC, but were unable to do so.  The Lynx lost the first game by a score of 3-1 and won the second game 6-5.

In game one, the Lynx took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning after a Jodi Fralick (Woburn, Mass.) single drove in Christina DiGiorgio (Lowell, Mass.).

In the bottom half of the inning, the Beavers bounced back with three runs off of Alicia Burnett (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) to take the advantage.  Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, Me.) drove in two runners with a single up the middle and later scored after McKell Barnes (Durham, Me.) tripled down the right field line.

The Lynx were held scoreless the rest of the game and lost 3-1.

Lesley's offense got going in the second game as Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, Mass.) had three RBI and finished the game with two hits in four trips to the plate.  Fralick was solid as well going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Lani Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, Mass.) reached base three times and scored three times in the lead off spot.

The Beavers scored all of their runs in the sixth and seventh innings but fell just short of tying the game up.  Burnett would get the final batter to fly out to left field with the winning run on second base to give Lesley the 6-5 victory.  The junior would finish the weekend with a 3-1 record after pitching all 26 innings the Lynx played.
