Lesley University vs. Elms College (Championships)

Chicopee, MA – Lesley University did something to NAC Player of the Year Kristi Guzzo that no other NAC team had done this year, score more than two runs. The number four seeded Lady Lynx gave a serious scare to the number one seeded and NAC Championships favorites Elms College in the first game of the day.

Led by Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, MA), who had two hits and two RBI’s, Sarah Wilson (Lowell, MA), two hits and one RBI, and Maureen Mikos (Fairfield, CT), two hits, the Lady Lynx got nine hits off Guzzo and scored four runs in a 6-4 loss to Elms College.

Guzzo and Elms seemed to be cruising along with a 1-0 in the fifth inning when they ran into some trouble. Lisa Pina (Somerville, MA) started the inning with an infield single. Katie Wilson (Kittery, ME) bunted Pina over to second. Following a Lani Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, MA) single and a fielder’s choice by Courtnie Leakeas (Lowell, MA) the bases were loaded for Spaziante. Seizing the opportunity Spaziante launched a long double off of Guzo which scored two and after an error on the play by the Elms third baseman Lesley was looking at a 3-1 lead. Sarah Wilson then crushed a Guzzo pitch to right center for a back to back double which scored Spaziante. With the damage done Elms was trailing the Lady Lynx 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

Elms was able to storm right back in the bottom of the fifth. With determination and persistence that showed why they were the number one seed, Elms was able to tie the game up at four. All three runs in the bottom of the fifth came with two outs.

Maureen Mikos (Fairfield, CT) who was absolutely dominating the day before against the very dangerous Lasell College seemed to run out of some gas in the fifth. She seemed to have been getting stronger and better as the game went along but the Elms hitters finally caught up to her in the fifth as they were able to put together five consecutive singles which led to the three runs.

Elms took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth as they scored two more runs. Once again both runs came with two outs in the inning. Lesley was unable to do anything in the top of the seventh as they fell to the Blazers 6-4.

Lesley will await the loser of the Castleton State Thomas College game. For more information on the Lady Lynx Softball team please go to their website.
