Barahona, Moutaineers Sweep Lynx

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Southern Vermont College junior Anthony Barahona (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit .478 and had a match-high 13 kills to lead the Mountaineers over Lesley, 3-0. With the win, SVC extends their current win-streak to three games and gets back to .500, sitting at 5-5 and 2-0 in New England College Conference play. The Lynx fall to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

Sophomore Joey Dighton (Riverside, Calif.) and freshman Caleb Odom (Redlands, Calif.) each chipped in with six kills for the Mountaineers while sophomore setter Herson Canta (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a match-high 26 assists. Barahona added a match-high nine digs while Dighton had a team-high two blocks in the win.

For the Lynx, sophomore Herbin Berreondo (Brighton, Mass.) finished with a team-high five kills while freshman Jess Cherry (Lancaster, Pa.) dished out ten assists and led the team with two blocks. Senior Sean Randall (Fremont, Calif.) led the Lynx with seven digs.

After the teams exchanged points throughout the start of the first set, SVC was able to get a little separation taking advantage of a Lesley error and put them ahead 11-9. From there, the Mountaineers rambled off six straight points behind the serving of freshman Alonzo Wright (Chula Vista, Calif.), who was able to nail two aces during the spurt. That run gave them a comfortable 17-9 lead, on their way to the 25-14 set win.

SVC carried that momentum into the second set as they jump out to an early 6-2 lead. Once again it was the serving of Wright that led the charge, as he served to the first four points of the set. The Mountaineers would build a 22-15 advantage before the Lynx got themselves back in it. Taking advantage of four consecutive SVC errors and a service ace by Berreondo, the Lynx scored five straight to cut the deficit to two. That is as close as they would get as three straight Lesley errors gave SVC a 25-20 second set victory. The 20 points that Lesley scored was the most they have scored in any set this season.

The third set was all SVC as Canta's serving and a slew of Lesley errors allowed the Mountaineers to score the first 13 points of the set. Odom had three kills in the set while junior Pierre Massena (West Milford, N.J.) nailed two.

The Lynx return to action when they host Regis College on Wednesday, February 20th at 8:00p at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols while SVC will travel to Daniel Webster on Saturday, February 23rd for a 12:00p start.
