CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University men's
volleyball team dropped a conference home match to Newbury College
3-0 (30-12, 30-24, 30-12) and saw their season record fall to 2-10
(2-6 NECVA, 2-4 NECC). Newbury improved to 13-4 (9-0 NECVA, 6-0
NECC) follow the straight set victory.
Newbury seniors Joshua Aberly (PALATINE,
Ill./Palatine) and Mark Thomas (WILBRAHAM,
Mass./Minnechaug Regional) led the Nighthawks offensively
with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Both players were extremely
efficient on the attack as Thomas had a .632 hit percentage while
Aberly sported a .500 hit percentage.
The Lynx were led by Nick Assad (ANDOVER,
Mass./Andover) who had five kills and kept Lesley in the
match defensively with a match-high 12 digs. Mike Jack
(BUENOS AIRES, Argentina/St. George's) chipped in
with two kills, two aces, and six digs.
The two Nighthawk setters were effective in finding their attackers
as Sean Copher (NORTHLAKE, Ill./West Leyden)
dished out a match-high 30 assists and teammate Matt
Talamantes (LOS ANGELES, Calif./Viewpoint) tallied 17
assists in the first set of the match.
Newbury handled the first and third sets easily, but Lesley caused
the visitors some trouble in the second set. The Lynx jumped out to
an early 9-2 advantage in the set. The Nighthawks battled back into
the set thanks to a 5-0 run that eventually brought the score to
14-12. With the score tied 19-19, Newbury went on another 5-0 that
gave them the lead for good as the Nighthawks went on to win the
set 30-24.
Lesley will travel to Endicott on Thursday, February 24 for a 7:00
pm start with the Gulls while Newbury hosts Rivier College on
February 25 at 7:00 pm.
