THE LEAD – The Lesley University men's tennis team concluded its home slate of games for the 2025 season with an exciting sweep of VTSU Johnson by the scores of 5-4 in the first match, and 6-3 in the second. For the Lynx, Saturday's two wins marked the first Head Coach Jason Walsh's head coaching career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles (Match 1):
- In the first doubles spot, DJ Cronin (New York, N.Y.) and Thomas Nicol (Acton, Mass. dropped the first match, 8-4.
- The second pairing in doubles Miles Brajdic (Atlanta, Ga.) and Aidan Stafford (Westford, Mass.) took down the Baders' No.2 pairing, 8-5.
- Finally, at the three spot in doubles James Ontiveros (Walham, Mass.) and Bennett Locke (Braintree, Mass.) defeated VTSU Johnson's No. 3 pairing and gave the Lynx a 2-1 advantage going into singles play.
Singles (Match 1):
- Leading off singles action for Lesley, Nicol bested VTSU Johnson's top singles spot, 6-2 and 6-3.
- The second spot saw Brajdic take part but ended up with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat.
- In singles three, Locke was downed 6-0, 6-4.
- Cronin unfortunately fell in the fourth spot by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
- Thanks to clutch play from both Stafford in the fifth spot and Ontiveros in the sixth, the Lynx were able to take the final two singles matchups and secure a 5-4 victory. Stafford took down the No. 5 spot (6-1, 6-1) whereas Ontiveros earned a win at singles No. 6 (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles (Match 2):
- Leading off doubles in match two, the pairing of Nicol and Cronin topped VTSU Johnson's No. 1 pairing, 8-3.
- In the second spot of doubles, Brajdic and Stafford won their matchup in a tough 8-6 battle.
- The last pairing of doubles saw Locke and Ontiveros come away with a 8-5 win.
Singles (Match 2):
- VTSU Johnson made a late push and took the first three singles matchups over Nicol (6-2, 6-4), Brajdic (6-3, 6-5), and Locke (6-0, 6-0).
- However, Lesley saved its best effort for last as the squad took the last three singles matchups led by a hard-fought win by Cronin in No. 4 singles (6-4, 3-6, and 10-2).
- In the fifth spot, Stafford won his matchup by a score of 6-4 and 6-4 and finally, Ontiveros clinched the victory for Lesley thanks to a 6-2, 7-5 win in No. 6 singles.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Nicol now has three singles wins on the year with his victory from match one.
- Locke earned his first doubles win of the season during match one.
- With the win today, Lesley earned its first victory since April 21, 2018 when the squad defeated Wheelock College. The victory also snapped a 30-game losing streak dating back to the 2018 season.
