THE LEAD – The Lesley University men's tennis program wrapped up its road trip weekend in Vermont with a pair of tight matches vs. VTSU Johnson. The Badgers prevailed in the opener, 8-1 before topping the Lynx in the weekend finale, 7-2 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Match 1)
- The sides battled in doubles play resulting in a 2-1 score to open the action in favor of the hosts. Johnson picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles while the Lesley tandem of DJ Cronin and AC Esparragoza notched the win in No. 3 action, 8-4.
- The Badgers control singles play at the top of the lineup as Matea Smith, Riley Fitzgerald, Faith Mead and Adiance Cheromiah downed their LU competitors in 1 through 4 singles play.
- Cronin stayed hot and picked up an 8-3 win in No. 5 singles action while Miles Brajdic enjoyed an 8-3 win for the Lynx in the No. 6 pairing.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Match 1)
- Brajdic and Bennett Locke played well in No. 2 doubles despite the setback, teaming up for four points in the 8-4 final.
- Cronin improved to 6-0 on the VT trip through his first three matches played going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles play.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Match 2)
- The ladder match had some tighter scores but a similar result as the Badgers flipped one result to pull out the 7-2 final.
- Cronin and Esparragoza nabbed another win at No. 3 doubles, this time with an 8-5 score.
- Brajdic also repeated in No. 6 singles with an 8-5 triumph.
- For the first time on the Vermont trip, Cronin fell in singles action, dropping his match 9-8 (6) in the tie-break format to Evan Cook.
- Esparragoza also lost a tight one in No. 4 singles, falling to Cheromiah 9-8 (5) in the tie-breaker as well.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Match 2)
- Cronin finished the weekend with a combined 7-1 record.
OF NOTE
- Nick Rosen continued to perform well for the Lynx out of the No. 1 singles spot despite coming up short on the day.
- Much of the same for James Ontiveros, Rosen's No. 1 doubles partner who competed in No. 3 singles in solid form.
- These matches were resumed from their April 14 start date due to weather related issues.
