THE LEAD – The Lesley University men's tennis team opened the 2024 campaign on Thursday afternoon vs. University of Massachusetts - Boston at the Weymouth Tennis Club, falling to the Beacons in the season-opener, 9-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Beacons took an early 3-0 lead in the affair by sweeping doubles play, picking up an 8-0 sweep from the No. 1 pairing of Kevin Kubinec / Thomas Tran.
• The Lynx avoided the shutout in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as Aidan Stafford and DJ Cronin snagged two points in an 8-2 setback in the No. 2 pairing while AC Esparragoza and Francisco Sosa Gomez suffered an 8-1 defeat in No. 3 play.
• Cronin put together the most competitive performance of the day in No. 4 singles action for Lesley, falling to Felix Nguyen 6-2, 7-5.
• First year James Ontiveros picked up a game n No. 2 singles action vs. Guillerme Ozoros, ultimately falling by a 6-1, 6-0 score.
• Sophomore AC Esparragoza also performed well in No. 5 singles, registering three games in a 6-1, 6-2 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• The match was the first for the Lynx men's tennis program since April 16, 2019.
• Along with Stafford, Cronin, Esparragoza, Ontiveros and Sosa Gomez, fellow newcomer Nick Rosen also made his collegiate debut for the match, signifying a collegiate debut for all six players in the Lesley lineup.

UP NEXT

• Lesley opens North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play this Saturday, April 6 when it plays host to SUNY Delhi for a conference doubleheader at the Harvard Tennis Courts with match times scheduled for 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM vs. the Broncos.
• UMB is idle until Tuesday, April 12 when they host Wheaton College at BC High School at noon.
