Virtual Senior Day: Men's Tennis

CAMBRIDGE, MA. -- Though they were unable to begin their season, the Lesley Lynx men's tennis team was led by a strong senior class of five players.

Gerry Chica, from Wallingford, Connecticut, played primarily at #2 doubles and #3 singles for the Lynx. Chica is a history major and also a member of the men's soccer team. He joined the tennis team in his sophomore season and played three years for the Lynx.

Patrick Corcoran, from West Hartford, Connecticut, played primarily at #3 doubles and #5 singles. He won six singles matches and three doubles matches in his junior year, leading to him being named one of the team's captains for the 2020 season. Corcoran is a history major and a goalkeeper the men's soccer team. He was a four-year member of the tennis team.

Evan Flaherty, from Scituate, Massachusetts, played primarily at #2 doubles and #4 singles for the Lynx. Flaherty was a four-year member of the tennis team. He was named NECC Rookie of the Week once during his freshman season and was named to the Sportsmanship Team after picking up three doubles wins. Flaherty is a photography major with a minor in fine arts.

Beowulf Urban, from Blue Hills, Maine, played primarily at #1 singles and #1 doubles for the Lynx. He is a four-year member of the team and was chosen as a co-captain in his sophomore season and continued on as one for the rest of his career. Urban was named NECC Rookie of the Week once during his freshman season. He is a business and marketing major and also a member of the men's soccer team.

Evan Zona, from Hingham, Massachusetts, played primarily at #3 doubles and #6 singles. Zona picked up one doubles win in his junior season and was a four-year member of the tennis team. He is a Counseling major with a minor in social work.

Zona says that the thing he misses most is that when the team practiced, "it felt like everybody was trying to help each other get better and improve, and the supportive attitudes of my teammates meant a lot to me."

"This would have been a special season with this group of seniors because I had the opportunity to play with them during my time at Lesley," says new head coach Niko Marcolini. "I knew them as the amazing group of tennis players that they are, but also the amazing group of young guys that they are. After our first practice, it was clear that we would've found a lot of success this season. It's a shame that we couldn't carry out the season because this was a special team."

This senior class was looking to lead the Lynx in their first season in the GNAC after previously competing in the NECC. With this group, the men's tennis team made one NECC semifinal in 2017-18.
