Bears Snap Lynx Streak at Three

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team downed visiting Lesley University, 8-1, in non-conference action on Monday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears captured all six singles matches in straight sets and took two of three doubles flights to win their fifth straight match and improve to 7-1 on the season.  The visiting Lynx slip to 4-4 as their modest three-game winning streak comes to an end.

BSU juniors Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass.) and Eric Johnson (Kingston, Mass.), sophomores Wesley Esthimer (Franklin, Mass.) and Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.), and freshmen Matt McLeod (Leicester, Mass.) and Alex McGannon (Fairhaven, Mass.) posted singles victories for the hosts.  Esthimer won at the first flight (6-1, 6-1), McLeod at the second spot (6-1, 6-1), and Farrell at number three (6-3, 6-1).  Bleau, Johnson and McGannon all won by identical scores of 6-0, 6-0 at the fourth through sixth flights, respectively.

Johnson remains unbeaten in singles play on the season with a perfect 7-0 mark, while Bleau improves to 7-1 with his fifth consecutive win.  McLeod won his fifth straight match as he is now 5-1 on the season.

In doubles play, junior Colin Fontaine (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore Tim McGaffigan (Dedham, Mass.) teamed for an 8-0 decision at the second flight, while sophomore Brendon Cooney (Rochester, Mass.) and freshman Michael Delisle (Berkley, Mass.) also won 8-0 at third doubles.

The Lynx recorded their only point of the match at first doubles as senior Nick Mattox (Pasadena, Md.) and junior Mike Kaufman (Boca Raton, Fla.) teamed up for an 8-3 victory.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday.  The Bears travel to Clark University for a non-conference match with the Cougars at 3:30 PM, while the Lynx host New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe Wheelock College at 7:30 PM.
