The Lynx rolled to their third consecutive New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) win with a 7-2 victory over Newbury College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Lesley improves to 4-3 on the year and 3-2 in NECC play.
Lesley first doubles tandem senior Nick Mattox (Pasadena, Md.) and junior Mike Kaufman (Boca Raton, Fla.) held off Newbury juniors Gerard Font-Raventos (Barcelona, Spain) and Steve Carey (Andover, Mass.), 8-1, to take the doubles portion of the afternoon, 2-1. Senior Alex Chappell (East Haddam, Conn.) and sophomore Wayne Gethers (Cambridge, Mass.) edged out Jimmy Paulsen (Monroe, Conn.) and sophomore Jordan Santos (Middlebury, Conn.), 8-6, in third doubles for the lone Nighthawk doubles victory.
In the singles, Mattox led the Lynx to the 5-1 victory defeating first singles opponent junior John Morgan (Cumberland, R.I.) in two sets, 6-2, 6-1 while fellow senior Alex Zhitnik (West Hartford, Conn.) held off Font-Raventos in second singles 6-0, 6-1. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Newbury first year Gabriel Marcolini(Newbury, Mass.) answered and took sixth singles opponent, Santos, to 12 games before falling, 7-5.
The Nighthawks return to the courts on Tuesday April 9th when they travel down to New London, Conn. for a 3:00 p.m. match against conference foe Mitchell College while the Lynx will play Bridgewater State University on Monday in non-conference action. That match is set to start at 4:00p.
