Mitchell Sweeps Doubles, Tops Lynx

Cambridge, Mass. – The Mitchell College Mariners swept doubles and dropped just one singles match en route to an 8-1 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) victory tonight at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. With the win, the Mariners improve to 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in the NECC, while the Lynx fall to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Mitchell senior Rocco Devona (Waterford, Conn.) and freshman Graham Cavanaugh (Redding, Conn.) teamed up to take No. 1 doubles over Lesley seniors Nick Mattox (Pasadena, Md.) and Alex Zhitnik (West Hartford, Conn.), 8-4. Juniors Zachary Simmons (Coventry, Conn.) and Randy Coons (Yonkers, N.Y.) took No. 2 doubles over Lesley juniors Mike Kaufman (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Thomas Tedesco (Bristol, Conn.), 8-1, while the team of Timothy Atkinson (Fall River, Mass.) and Chris McKeon (North Scituate, R.I.) made it a sweep in doubles when they took the No. 3 slot, 8-4, over Lynx senior Jimmy Paulsen (Monroe, Conn.) and sophomore Jordan Santos (Middlebury, Conn.)

Devona and Simmons both rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories to open up singles play at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Cavanaugh kept up the trend by taking No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tedesco while Atkinson defeated sophomore Roman Pham (Lynnfield, Mass.) in No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2.
McKeon rounded out the victory for Mitchell with a 6-4, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles over Paulsen.

Kaufman grabbed the only win for the Lynx as he took No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Coons.

The Mariners will hit the court again when they travel to Regis College on Tuesday, April 2nd for a 4:30p start before hosting the Lynx on Thursday, April 4th. That match is set to start at 3:00p.
