CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University men’s tennis team kicked off their 2010 season with a 2-0 record over the weekend, defeating both Wheelock College and Albertus Magnus College 6-3.  It was the first time in program history that the team had won their opening match of the season.

Match One vs. Wheelock College

The Lesley University men’s tennis team competed in their first match of the 2010 spring season, defeating New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) rival Wheelock College 6-3 despite forfeiting the #6 singles and #3 doubles matches.  The Lynx win their opening match for the first time in program history and are now 1-0 (1-0 NECC).

Finding themselves down 2-0 at the start of the match, the Lynx needed to win the majority of their contests if they wanted a chance to win.

In doubles play, Lesley took the number two doubles match 8-1 behind a dominating performance by Nick Mattox (PASADENA, Md./Chesapeake) and Alex Zhitnik (WEST HARTFORD, Conn./Conard).  In the number one doubles match, however, the combo of David Newton (HAMDEN, Conn./Hamden) and Alejandro Lazo (BOSTON, Mass./Weston) fell 8-4.

Down 3-1 in the match to that point, Lesley looked for impressive showings in singles play to pull off a victory.  The Lynx did just that, sweeping the Wildcats in all five of the remaining singles matches.

Newton defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-1 in the number one singles match, Mattox won 7-5, 6-0 in number two singles, Zhitnik won 6-0, 6-3 in number three singles, and Lazo was victorious in 6-3, 6-2 number four singles match.  Number five singles player Beau Morimando (BAYSHORE, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) needed a second set tiebreaker to defeat his opponent 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).

Match Two vs. Albertus Magnus College

In their second match of the weekend against Albertus Magnus College, Lesley came away with another 6-3 win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Newton won his second number one singles match of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-7 (8-6), 6-1 victory.  He was also part of the number one doubles duo along with Mattox that won 8-5.

Coming off of the NECC men’s volleyball tournament, Scott Wheeler (EAST HAMPTON, Conn./East Hampton) and Christian Domingo (LOS ANGELES, Calif./College of the Canyons) respectively won the number four singles and number six singles without giving up a game at 6-0, 6-0 each.

Wheeler also teamed up with Zhitnik to win number two doubles 8-4 and Domingo paired with Lazo to win number three doubles 8-4.

The Lynx will be back in action on Saturday, April 3 against NECC opponent and defending conference champion Mitchell College down in New London, Connecticut.
