Tennis goes deep in NECC Championship tourney

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Mitchell College Mariners continued their successful 2009 campaign today at the inaugural New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Men's Tennis Championship.  Team members claimed victories in six of the nine total flights played on the day, two of three in doubles action and four of six in singles play.

The tournament began early this morning with both singles and doubles matches played as 8-game pro sets due to the rescheduling of play from yesterday's inclement weather.  In singles action, Mitchell and Lesley University each had two teams advance to the finals as the Mariners' Kyle Carmona/Daniel Dworetsky and the Lynx' Sonny Ljutica/ David Newton moved forward in Flight One and Lesley's Fran Cusick/Dory LeCount and Mitchell's Adam Samuels/Chris White won their matches in Flight Two and Flight Three, respectively.  Matt Clewer/Tim Howard from Becker College took steady control of Flight Two, however, knocking off top-seeded Small/Mahar from Mitchell in the semifinals and defeating Lesley's duo of Cusick/LeCount for the championship.

The Lynx and Mariners continued to dominate the semifinal round as four Mariners and five Lynx won their first sets.  Mitchell had more staying power, however, as they capitalized in four championship sets.  Carmona led the way for Mitchell notching title wins in both singles and doubles play.  Two fellow Mariners, Dworetsky and Samuels were the only other tournament participants to match this feat.

The NECC and host Newbury College would like to congratulate all tournament participants for their fine play and solid effort.  Please see below for a summary of the day's results:
