
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Lesley University men's tennis team were victorious in two matches over the weekend against Johnson State College and Wheelock College, bringing their season win total to a program-best three wins as the Lynx improved to 3-1 (2-1 NECC).
Match One vs. Johnson State College
Lesley squeezed out a 5-4 victory over Johnson State thanks to some terrific play from their #2 and #3 doubles teams.
The duo of Fran Cusick (Lexington, Mass.) and Alejandro Lazo (Boston, Mass.) fell behind 7-2 in their match, but stormed back to win seven straight points to win 9-7. With a close 8-6 triumph by the #3 doubles team of Tyler Reeves (Coventry, Conn.) and Victoria Curtis (Boothbayharbor, Me.), the Lynx were able to take two out of the three doubles matches.
In singles play, #2 David Newton (Hamden, Conn.) won in impressive fashion 6-2, 6-1. Thanks to singles wins by Cusick, Lazo, and Curtis, the Lynx pulled off a close victory.
Match Two vs. Wheelock College
The Lynx continued their momentum into their Sunday match against NECC opponent Wheelock College, winning 9-0.
Cusick completed a perfect weekend as the senior once again won both his doubles and singles match.
Newton played his first #1 singles match of the season and defeated his Wildcat opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-4. Freshman Sonny Ljutica (Shenendehowa, N.Y.) won his first singles match of the season, taking the #2 singles match 6-1, 6-4.
Sophomore Peter Parrales rebounded nicely after losing the first set of his match, to take the second set 6-2 and the tiebreaker 10-6.
Lesley will be back on the courts on Thursday as the Lynx bring their three-match win streak to Rhode Island College.
