THE LEAD – Jonathan Cayole scored a pair of goals including the game-winner to lift the VTSU Johnson men's soccer program over Lesley University, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference action at Minaert Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Badgers got out to an early 1-0 lead as Josiah Phillips used a setup from Fabrice Kerozene to give the hosts the one-goal lead just 4:11 into the match.
- VTSU doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute on Cayole's first goal of the day, which ultimately proved to be the game-winner.
- Lesley used the halftime break to regroup and made sure to come out strong in the second stanza as senior Nick Wadleigh (Glastonbury, Conn.) made it 2-1 just six minutes into the half, connecting with Marc Kenny Derac (Waltham, Mass.) for his third goal of the season.
- Over the final 30 minutes, the Lynx fired seven more shots on frame but Lucas Gehring stood tall making all seven stops to keep the Badgers in front, 2-1.
- Cayole put the nail in the coffin with his second goal of the contest in the final minute of play to secure the 3-1 final for VTSU Johnson.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Lesley outshot the Badgers 18-11 in the setback and also owned an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks, but were only able to find the back of the net once.
- Gehring finished the day with a season-high seven saves, all in the second half, to earn the win in goal.
- Lesley's Aiden Hendricks (Richmond, Va.) stopped five shots.
UP NEXT
- The Lynx are idle until next Saturday, Oct. 11 when they host UMaine Farmington in another NAC clash at 2:30 PM.
- VTSU heads to its in-state neighbor Castleton State on Tuesday, Oct. 7 for a 7:00 PM midweek showdown.
