THE LEAD – After traveling to Thomas College for the squad's final road contest of the season, the Lesley University men's soccer team fell to the Thomas College Terries, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Thomas wasted no time as the hosts got on the board less than three minutes in (2:27) after Micky Woodrow corralled the initial miss from David Ivarsson and put his shot past Lesley goalie Josiah Williams' (Durham, N.C.) right side.
- Aidan Stafford (Westford, Mass.) had a chance for the equalizer at 11:19 and sent a shot to the left corner but was turned away by Terriers netminder Jamie Fischer.
- Later in the first at 17:27, the Terriers drew a foul that led to a Joshua Joseph penalty kick that found its way past Williams to make it 2-0.
- Despite being down 2-0, Lesley's offense continued to play aggressively as the Lynx took eight shots but could not find the back of the net. Both Marc Kenny Derac (Waltham, Mass.) and Caleb Race (Wellington, Fla.) peppered Fischer with shots at 20:02 and 20:27, respectively, but Fisher stopped each shot.
- As the first half came to a close (44:15), Joseph netted his second goal when he put his shot past Williams' left side.
- Joseph and the Terriers continued their momentum at the start of the second (46:34) when Joseph potted a hat trick after Cody Robinson and Woodrow set him up.
- More than 20 minutes into the second (68:41), Thomas extended its lead to five when Payton Mitchell scored after he received a great look from Ivarsson.
- Despite being down by multiple goals, Lesley had multiple opportunities as the squad outshot Thomas 8-7. However, Thomas' defense would not let up a goal and secure a 5-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- In 52 minutes of action, Williams made four saves. At 52:21, William Martinez (Lynn, Mass.) came in and took over the rest of the contest. For Martinez, Wednesday marked his second career appearance.
- Lesley had three student-athletes take three or more shots on Wednesday (Kenny Derac- four, Stafford- three, Nick Wadleigh (Glastonbury, Conn.)- three).
- Joseph's hat trick was the third of his career and second this season.
