THE LEAD – In a high-scoring contest with eight combined goals, the Lesley University men's soccer team came up short, 5-3 to the UMaine Farmington Beavers Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UMaine Farmington opened up the scoring thanks to a Zach Chaisson penalty kick after he drew a foul inside the goalie box. From there, he lined up his penalty kick and put his shot past Lesley goalie Josiah Williams (Durham, N.C.) right side for the early 1-0 lead.
  • Shortly after the goal, Lesley had a chance for the equalizer from the boots of Tyler Fortin (Farmington, Conn.) and Caleb Race (Wellington, Fla.) , respectively, but was turned away each time by Beavers netminder Jackson Leach.
  • With nearly nine minutes left in the half (41:13), the Beavers doubled their lead (2-0) thanks to a Jackson Landry goal. However, the Lynx responded nearly three minutes later (44:03) when Aidan Stafford (Westford, Mass.) buried his penalty kick past Leach after UMaine Farmington was whistled for a handball.
  • Later in the second period (68:40), knotted at one, UMaine Farmington once again went ahead by two when Caleb Kolman put home a one-timer for the 3-1 advantage.
  • Despite another two-goal deficit, the Lynx once again responded with its own goal when Nick Wadleigh (Glastonbury, Conn.) took advantage of Beavers defensive breakdown and found an open lane for the goal. Nearly ten minutes later, Lesley evened things up at three when Stafford headed home a corner kick by Miguel Vasconcelos (Sharon, Mass.).
  • Unfortunately, at the 80:41 mark, UMaine Farmington would score the eventual game-winner when Shukri Hassan generated his own offense and put his shot past an out-of-position Williams, making it 4-3. The visitors tacked on an insurance goal at 89:32 when Mohamed Adow capitalized on a free kick and eventually secured the 5-3 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Stafford's brace was the first of his career.
  • Wadleigh's score is a team-best, seventh on the year.
  •  Despite being outshot 23-12, Lesley was only outshot 9-8 in the first half.
  • Williams finished with a season-high nine saves Saturday.
