THE LEAD – The Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team erupted for five goals in the second half to claim a 6-0 Homecoming victory Saturday over visiting Lesley University in North Atlantic Conference action at Ritchie Field. The Mariners improve to 3-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the NAC, while the visiting Lynx fall to 2-7 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hunter Crea staked MMA to a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a free kick from about 30 yards out, bending the shot around the Lynx wall into the bottom left corner.
- The game remained a one-score contest until the 50th minute when Ronnie Morgan doubled the lead to 2-0 to give the hosts a multi-goal cushion and also open the flood gates.
- Over the next 10 minutes, the Mariners found the back of the net three more times to take a very comfortable 5-0 lead with goals from Matthew Villeneuve, Xander Fortuna-Ramos and John-John Dickenson.
- Leo Fereghetti capped the scoring in the 74th minute to account for the 6-0 final for MMA.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Despite the lopsided final, the shots were relatively evenly matched as the hosts only owned a 15-13 edge.
- Osmyn Atwood (New York, N.Y.) led LU with a team-best three shot attempts.
- Reagan Moyniham made six saves to post the shutout win in net
- Aiden Hendricks (Richmond, Va.) suffered the setback making a pair of saves in 66 minutes of action before first year William Martinez (Lynn, Mass.) closed the match in net for the Lynx.
UP NEXT
- The Lynx have the week off before playing host to UMPI on Saturday, October 5 at 12:30 PM for the program's senior day game.
- Maine Maritime will be on the road on Friday for a NAC matchup against Thomas College in Waterville. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
