CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- Lesley held on for a 2-1 win over New England Collegiate Conference rival Newbury College on a slippery, muddy Hedley Field on the campus of Pine Manor College Thursday afternoon.
Lesley sophomore Herbin Berreondo's header off an Ari Sinanis kick put the Lynx on the board at 22:46, with the defender's second goal off the senior's league-leading eighth assist sending Lesley on top 1-0.
Fellow senior Sean Randall added to the lead with what would become the game-winner, upping the lead with an unassisted score from 25 yards out sending the Lynx into intermission on top 2-0.
Lesley outshot Newbury 9-6 through the first half, but the Nighthawks would flip that discrepancy upside down in getting on the board in the 76th minute. Senior Shaundize Moosavizad's team-leading 11th goal cut the Lynx lead in half, but Lesley held the Nighthawks without a shot for the next 10-plus minutes in holding on for the 2-1 win.
In net, senior Nigel Leahy picked up the win for the Lynx, making five saves on the afternoon.
Newbury outshot Lesley 8-3 in the second half and 14-12 on the contest. A match spanning two hours, 26 minutes featured 20 fouls on each side and six yellow cards, four of which went against the Nighthawks.
The win moves Lesley to 7-4-2 overall and 4-0-0 in NECC play, while Newbury drops to 4-8-1 on the season, 1-2 in the NECC.
Lesley returns to play on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against Daniel Webster College at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, MA.
