Lynx nab fourth seed in NECC Playoffs

NASHUA, N.H. -  Oscar Borjesson (Stockholm, Sweden) knocked home a Mike Lohr (Chepachet, R.I.) corner kick with just 47 seconds remaining in overtime, delivering the Daniel Webster College men's soccer team a stirring 1-0 victory over New England Collegiate Conference rival Lesley University Monday afternoon in the regular season finale for both clubs.

Borjesson's game-winner delivered the Eagles (9-7, 4-2 NECC) their ninth win of the season, breaking the all time program record season victories mark, surpassing the 1993 squad that went 8-7-2.

The Eagles victory also sewed up the third seed for the inaugural four-team NECC championship tournament which begins Thursday. The Eagles will travel to second seeded Becker College for a 6:00 p.m. semifinal matchup.

Lesley (5-12-1, 3-3 NECC) finished fourth and will visit regular season champion and top seed Mitchell College in Thursday's second semifinal.

Thursday's winners will advance to Sunday's championship at the highest remaining seed.

Borjesson's winner ended what had all the markings of a frustrating afternoon as the Eagles controlled most of the tempo throughout and finished with a 20-9 total shots and 10-2 shots on goal advantage.

Lynx keeper Zach Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, Mass.) repeatedly stymied the Eagles attack, making nine saves including two nifty stops late in the second half to force the extra session.

Eagle keeper Fred Jacobs was called upon for just two stops, but his second was a dandy as Lesley almost stole the game in the final minute of regulation.

After a quick break into the offensive zone, Lesley pressed and Tyler Reeves (Coventry, Conn.) found Yair Correa (Pawtucket, R.I.) on the far right side. Jacobs moved quickly to cut down the angle and made a diving stop to deny the bid 10 yards out of the goal mouth.

Lohr and rookie Alex Jackson (Kent, Ohio) helped pace the Eagle offense with Lohr registering five shots.

Daniel Webster will be making just its third all time trip to the postseason and will be seeking its first victory. The Eagles also appeared in 1995 and 2003 as members of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Daniel Webster and Becker met this past Saturday at Eagle Field with the Hawks scoring a 1-0 victory.
